"ONE-EYED" WILLY IN ASTORIA,OREGON
Astoria is built on the mouth of the Columbia River. Once a thriving town of salmon canneries they now depend on drawing people for sport fishing and crabing. Their big claim to fame is the film "Goonies" which was filmed in the area.
There are some very lovingly restored old buildings downtown.
Blue Scorcher Bakery and Cafe is a worker owned business that has great breads and other delicious products.
Another reason for a visit are the excellent breweries and coffee roasters. They even support two independent bookstores.
Still not convinced that Astoria is for you, then consider the Astoria Column. It was built in 1926 and depects the history of the area and offers a climb of 164 steps to the observation platform for great views of the river and town.
Astoria is a cool little town with a good sense of humor-
and reverence for its working class history.
